Caught in Micro Debt, the 2010 Norwegian documentary, caused upheaval in the microfinance industry when it accused Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus of mishandling funds donated by the Norwegian government. The film asserts that microlending is a less perfect development tactic than popular opinion suggests by presenting anecdotal stories of loan recipients and interviews with various authorities on the topic of microfinance. The controversial film made international news and spurred debate about the effectiveness of microcredit and the underlying incentives of the lending institutions. Because this film has been part of the recent narrative in the microfinance industry, the Microfinance Club of New York and the Microfinance Association at NYU have partnered to hold a productive conversation about the film's assertions. Join us for a screening of the film followed by a panel discussion with three distinguished members of the microfinance industry: David Roodman (Senior Fellow at the Center for Global Development), Syed Mohsin Ahmed (CEO, Pakistan Microfinance Network) and Rocio Cavazos (Senior Consultant, Deutsche Bank Global Social Investment Funds Group). Free to NYU Students.
