Approximately half of the world's poor are Muslims. Yet conventional microcredit is incompatible with Islamic financial principles, resulting in a huge unmet demand for enterprise capital at the bottom of the pyramid. Surveys in the Middle East, for example, revealed that 20–40 percent of respondents cite religious reasons for not accessing conventional microloans. However, innovations in Islamic financial products are increasingly being adapted by microfinance providers. Mohammed Khaled of the World Bank's Consultative Group to Assist the Poor will provide an overview and introduction to the variety of innovations currently underway in the Middle East and Asia which could help provide financial access to millions of Muslim poor.
The event is free for MFCNY members and Deutsche Bank employees.
